GregYaitanes hey.

before we start i want to thank the @brizzly team for hosting this picnic. as you can see i am not limited to 140c which is just one cool aspects of it. i'm also not cluttering up my followers timelines with my answers. plus we can expand photos and video links during this chat. @brizzly is cooking up some amazing new things using the twitter platform and they are taking time out to make this happen. for that reason we are limiting this chat to two hours. hopefully we can get to all the questions and issues. we are not taking questions about the show (cast, storyline type questions) and this is not intended to promote the show which is why we are doing this now and not closer to air. this is a forum for filmmakers to help each other. and lastly, this event is not intended to be an endorsement or advertisement of the Canon 5D MarkII. this camera was a tool for us to accomplish the goals we had. period. little did we know that that was such global interest in what we did.

this picnic brings together what i hope is the full experience of that we went through from prep to post. Director of Photography the fearless and fiercely talented Gale Tattersall and Post Poduction Producer and guru Allen Palmer. in addtion we have a couple of the voices involved with the DSLR movement. i've asked Cali Lewis and Philip Bloom to be here today. Cali is my source of anything noteworthy in tech news. she broke the story on her show http://www.geekbrief.tv/brief-735-ipad-sales-sub-25nm-flash-memory-house-using-5d-mark-ii/ . she was the first person to introduce me to the canon 5D and what was being done with it. once word was out that we shot the finale on it, i did an interview with philip http://philipbloom.co.uk/2010/04/19/in-depth-interview-with-executive-producer-and-director-of-house-season-finale-shot-on-canon-5dmkii/ philip is the five star general of the DSLR movement and the hub of all knowledge that's being shared out there. they've been huge in getting the word out. unfortunately with our tech delay today we've just lost Cali from the chat which is too bad.

the season six finale of [H]ouse airs May 17th at 8pm EST/PST on FOX. i hope you enjoy it. it's a special piece of work that took a team to make.

now let's get to it.
GregYaitanes allen. why don't you take this http://twitter.com/colinhart/status/13141100203
about 1 hour ago
PhilipBloom Quick hello to everyone! Sorry for delay!
allenpalmer The issues were largely on the front end of the post process. Because we had a post system up and running we had to make this file based digital system look to our editors like a film telecine production.
allenpalmer Given that we converted all the H264 files in the Avid DS, reocrded them to HDCamSR tape and brought those tapes into a telecine bay to do a synching and color correction session to create our dailies comp reels.
GregYaitanes it would have been great to try and alter the workflow more but felt we had our hands full with changing the format at the end of the season. in theory we could have taking the footage from camera right to the editing room.
allenpalmer Exactly, I would have loved to walk up to post with footage as soon as it was shot.
PhilipBloom Very interesting that you went to HDCamSR tape
about 1 hour ago
GregYaitanes allen this seems good for you. or philip. http://twitter.com/rossmcw/status/13141120730
about 1 hour ago
GregYaitanes allen? http://twitter.com/rossmcw/status/13141120730
about 1 hour ago
allenpalmer We still offline the show on SD Avids and assemble in the DS from tape. So it was important to have our dailies colorist looking at all the footage in HD before it got to us.
PhilipBloom I think workflow for these cameras is going to change a lot, especially with release of new Avid Media Composer 5 that will support all forms of quicktime natively
about 1 hour ago
GregYaitanes ones in tight spaces. we got three camera into places we could not have gotten one film camera. http://twitter.com/maya295_/status/13141605881
about 1 hour ago
GregYaitanes gale can you follow up on that philip? what's been your expierence?
GregYaitanes and pardon my spelling everyone. i am the worst ever.
PhilipBloom with workflow Greg?
Galetat Amazing thing... you can put 3 cams in the space of one Arri... the eyelines can be really close..
GregYaitanes what have you appreciated shooting with these cameras?
GregYaitanes gale was excited about how tight together the cameras could get.
GregYaitanes three camera in a small hallway.
PhilipBloom That's the great things about these cameras. The space they take up. I find it much more of an intimate way of filming and freeing
about 1 hour ago
GregYaitanes three cameras in a small room.
Galetat 3 cameras in a cupboard!
GregYaitanes intimate is a good way to put it. plus it's not a giant thing in the actors face. and no camera noise.
Galetat The sound department loved it
GregYaitanes gale you want to take this one http://twitter.com/maya295_/status/13141761588
about 1 hour ago
Galetat The depth of field is so special... there is no other system gives you that
about 1 hour ago
GregYaitanes i agree!
GregYaitanes that was my favorite aspect. the size of the system and the depth of field.
GregYaitanes allen? http://twitter.com/mopho_barry/status/13141840030
about 1 hour ago
PhilipBloom I think a lot of people are shocked you shot so wide open Gale. How did you cope?
GregYaitanes allen? http://twitter.com/mopho_barry/status/13141840030
about 1 hour ago
Galetat Motion can be a problem... artfacting... but like Philip says... you shoot arount the fragility and go for the good stuff
about 1 hour ago
Galetat my focus pullers went gray
PhilipBloom it must have been like surgery for them Gale!
Galetat it was hell but it worked... we even shot on the canon 50mm T1.0... no depth
about 1 hour ago
PhilipBloom only a T1.0? No 0.75 available?! ;)
allenpalmer In post, I would say that converting the files from H264 and getting to tape was the biggest drag. We started doing footage breaks 4 times a day to keep things rolling.
Galetat They had to judge everything by eye from the best monitors... Kubtrik had it easy!
GregYaitanes allen. grab that post question
about 1 hour ago
PhilipBloom But with more time Allen you wouldn't use that workflow. That was purely down to this being all new and a first
about 1 hour ago
Galetat sorry Kubrick
PhilipBloom I think Mr. Kubrick would have loved these cameras SO MUCH
about 1 hour ago
GregYaitanes and for those who don't know what we are referring to...
Galetat Barry Lyndon!
PhilipBloom I know Gale, he wouldn't have had to go to NASA to get his lens and he could have shot with just a couple of candles!
GregYaitanes http://twitter.com/5Y4M/status/13141843505
about 1 hour ago
allenpalmer In time the conversion process will become much faster, but on a TV schedule you can't have bottle neck where footage has been shot, but your editors can't start cutting it yet.
Galetat One candle as the Zacuto tests show!
GregYaitanes we sort of covered this. it's size and depth of field. richer then film.
Galetat There is the other advantage... you have 50 film stocks on a dial to use
about 1 hour ago
GregYaitanes that was amazing.
Galetat you can go from iso 100 - 1600 in a heartbeat
about 1 hour ago
GregYaitanes changing stocks at a push of a button
about 1 hour ago
PhilipBloom exactly Gale/ Greg. What these cameras give you is ENORMOUS flexibility
about 1 hour ago
Galetat one the 1D... you can go to 6400
GregYaitanes changing stocks at a push of a button
about 1 hour ago
PhilipBloom Yes they have issues, know the limiations and work around them
about 1 hour ago
Galetat exactly!
PhilipBloom exactly Gale, for the Zacuto tests with the Nikon D3s we shot clean at 25000 ISO!
allenpalmer The ISO setting becomes kind of an ND filter.
PhilipBloom but even at the lowest ISO allen it's still too sensitive!
Galetat thats how we got to wide open... T1.2, T1.4
about 1 hour ago
PhilipBloom you were indoors for the entire shot Gale?
Galetat I agree I wish you could go below iso 100
about 1 hour ago
GregYaitanes gale? philip? http://twitter.com/JeffyMe/status/13142642107
about 1 hour ago
Galetat No.. we had to match night exteriors to studio interiors... other end of the street
about 1 hour ago
Galetat go Philip
GregYaitanes gale. grab this one http://twitter.com/raunnating/status/13142620624
about 1 hour ago
PhilipBloom The cost benefits are of course significant but that's not just the reason people use them like House. It's the freedom and aesthetic
about 1 hour ago
GregYaitanes on our app. InHouse for the iphone we will have some behind the scenes in the video section of the app. that content will be avail on May 17th the night it airs. http://twitter.com/JDog23/status/13142614576
about 1 hour ago
Galetat we didn't do too many swish pans... just transitioned in different ways... we knew it was a danger... but there are software fixes out as we speak.. Philip?
PhilipBloom I met up with Robert Rodriguez in Austin and he has just bought a 5DmkII and he shot a music video with it and said it was like going back to his El Mariachi days. He adores them
about 1 hour ago
GregYaitanes i believe we use two of them and downloaded the footage and copied over it. gale is this correct? http://twitter.com/maya295_/status/13142581328
about 1 hour ago
PhilipBloom There are post fixes for rolling shutter, the foundry do one and lock 'n' load do one
about 1 hour ago
GregYaitanes gale? philip? off point but anything to offer? http://twitter.com/KBediting/status/13142560587
about 1 hour ago
PhilipBloom the foundry one is VERY clever, it's pricey and slow though. Best to avoid needing them with controlled shooting
about 1 hour ago
Galetat We had 21 cards between 3 cameras... which got us through the day without having to erase them
about 1 hour ago
PhilipBloom Go out and make stuff, use the internet like Vimeo, post your work, get noticed.
GregYaitanes the finale is all shot on the 5D except for one shot is on film. we also shot the opening to ep 17 which hugh directed on the 5D as well. http://twitter.com/antoniorui/status/13142517124
about 1 hour ago
GregYaitanes focus. gale? allen? philip? http://twitter.com/theCasBauer/status/13142467068
about 1 hour ago
Galetat Just go out shoot your dreams... and get seen on Vimeo... now these DSLRs have enabled everybody
about 1 hour ago
allenpalmer There were actually two shots from 5D in last Monday's episode.
PhilipBloom the opening to that episode Greg, "Lockdown" was so beautiful. it made me sad when it cut to film ;)
GregYaitanes and not being able to take and HD feed from the camera.
GregYaitanes gale and allen? http://twitter.com/raunnating/status/13142670441
about 1 hour ago
PhilipBloom Codec, compression, rolling shutter and aliasing fo rme
about 1 hour ago
Galetat at the moment, the lenses available, the compression, and getting a raw feed from the sensor
about 1 hour ago
PhilipBloom HD feed sucks out of the 5D as it drops to SD, 7D and 1DmkiV stay HD but none of them are clean feed. Once we get that then we can skip the codec and get something SO much better
about 1 hour ago
GregYaitanes allen? gale? http://twitter.com/raunnating/status/13142620624
about 1 hour ago
Galetat we answered that I thought
GregYaitanes one thing that is amazing is that this camera costs very little compared to a film camera. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001G60DUE?ie=UTF8&tag=brizzly-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B001G60DUE
about 1 hour ago
GregYaitanes that we shot this finale on a consumer camera is amazing.
PhilipBloom i think Canon will argue with there Greg ;) the 5dmkii is a professional stills camera that shoots great video
about 1 hour ago
GregYaitanes gale? allen? http://twitter.com/alexmaragos/status/13142705592
about 1 hour ago
Galetat I personally... really only like the 5D... because of the huge sensor
about 1 hour ago
PhilipBloom there is a really cheap 550D/ T2i for under a $1000 that shoots awesome video too
about 1 hour ago
GregYaitanes i love that all these tech questions can finally be answered by people who know the answers. lol.
PhilipBloom the geeks are here!
Galetat we had our 5D's set on 'Neutral"... it gives you the cleanest files...
GregYaitanes what do you know about this philip? allen? http://twitter.com/diogolouzada/status/13142716357
about 1 hour ago
PhilipBloom and contrast down Gale?
allenpalmer In converting the files was worked to get a transfer that didn't crash any of the shadow detail.
Galetat We had everything set down the middle
about 1 hour ago
PhilipBloom Yes, CS5 will let you do that with a modern intel MAC. not tried it yet, but personally I try to get out of 8 bit into 10 bit as it works better for post
about 1 hour ago
GregYaitanes gale? http://twitter.com/jjho8/status/13142716511
about 1 hour ago
PhilipBloom That's very interesting Gale as we found in our Zacuto tests that contrast all the wall down gave us two more stops of latitude
about 1 hour ago
Galetat 1600 on the 5D... after that we got noise in the shadows on our tests
about 1 hour ago
Galetat As we were a night shoot all the way... I was able to control the dynamic range very easily
about 1 hour ago
PhilipBloom Yep and the noise is ugly
GregYaitanes philip? gale? http://twitter.com/JeffyMe/status/13143058333
about 1 hour ago
PhilipBloom technology is moving SO FAST...this time next year, who knows?
Galetat I think cameras will get smaller... look at the Red Epic and Arri Alexa
about 1 hour ago
GregYaitanes gale did a commerical with it. then we used it on the opening of ep17. the demands of the finale required use to be in small spaces and i needed something compact that would also allow us to keep an intimacy with the actors. and gale is a wild man. http://twitter.com/bmax67/status/13143177403
about 59 minutes ago
PhilipBloom Great questions from Jamie_F there Greg....
GregYaitanes allen? http://twitter.com/jamie_f/status/13143190189
about 59 minutes ago
Galetat As I said before balls are handed to the DP by the director!!
PhilipBloom I have had many objections from Networks using 5D for full acquisition. I am hoping what House have done will silence the naysayers.
GregYaitanes on my end there were no issues. they saw our tests and everything was acceptable. otherwise we could not have done it. as far as the issues. allen? http://twitter.com/jamie_f/status/13143190189
about 58 minutes ago
GregYaitanes gale? philip? http://twitter.com/RoboN8te/status/13143172569
about 57 minutes ago
Galetat Never used a meter... just used the false color on our Marshall monitors..
GregYaitanes allen? http://twitter.com/beninsler/status/13143164797
about 56 minutes ago
PhilipBloom The false colour works well. I have never used a meter with one either
about 56 minutes ago
allenpalmer Well, there's probably going to be some QC people in foreign territories that are going to have questions, but there is nothing that is taking people out of the story.
GregYaitanes it was not. we struggled with this but the pullers were very good and got it as after the first day. but this was the largest obstacle. http://twitter.com/paulbahn/status/13143117444
about 56 minutes ago
GregYaitanes we moved quicker because we were leaner and meaner. and we did not have to cut if we did not want to which kept the actors in the moment. the small cameras and close shooting let the actors forget about the lens much quicker. http://twitter.com/MMDM/status/13143110501
about 54 minutes ago
Galetat Difficult but possible... it's the wider lenses that are tougher... but we also used again the Marshall peaking for focus
about 54 minutes ago
GregYaitanes i also loved how we were not fighting the weight of things. we could run stuff around the set so quickly.
GregYaitanes not sure. philip? http://twitter.com/enbeecee/status/13143292041
about 53 minutes ago
Galetat if we'd had to move Arri's around in a set with a 2ft 6 ceiling we would have been killed...
GregYaitanes i have a long list. cine style lenses. HD feed. http://twitter.com/shellen/status/13143238737
about 52 minutes ago
GregYaitanes gale and philip can you follow up?
allenpalmer As with our film episodes we have two sets of dailies tapes - our flat pass in HD dailies and color timed in SD. This allows us to save as much information for the material we use to build the final show.
GregYaitanes i have more
GregYaitanes but those are the top two.
allenpalmer The footage that we actually used to build the final master did not go through an dailies color correction, those corrections are only applied to the SD material we use in offline.
Galetat the 50 T1.0 is not made any more... and is a collectors piece... seen on eBay upto $4k... but the other L lenses are all around $1.5k i think
about 51 minutes ago
PhilipBloom Loads of requests for Canon....like two pages worth!
GregYaitanes i'd like to shoot more of the show on the 5D if the story calls for it. if i was shooting a pilot i would never go back to film. would i use the 5D? i dunno. i would have to see where the cameras are at that time. the red or the sony something or whatever might be the new leader in the field. it's all changing so fast. http://twitter.com/JDog23/status/13143224121
about 51 minutes ago
GregYaitanes list some philip!
PhilipBloom I was offered the 50 T1.0 for 3500 Euros recently.
GregYaitanes i don't believe so. allen? http://twitter.com/frozen4life/status/13143203749

PhilipBloom HDMI clean uncompressed out. Peaking on LCD. Proper Audio. LONG LIST!
GregYaitanes ha. anything we could get our hands on. down to a flag holder strap that would be used by a marching band. otherwise mono pods and sandbags and consumer tripods. once and while we put it in the chapman pee wee dolly http://twitter.com/Ollicollins/status/13143800143

GregYaitanes philip looks like a movie star so we are thinking about it. http://twitter.com/JDog23/status/13143777744

Galetat I.m writing a report for them... on our experiences... and it will be lengthy too!

GregYaitanes a couple more every once and while depending on how hard the shot was. there was worry that a great take might get lost but that did not happen. http://twitter.com/billwalshdp/status/13144084794
about 42 minutes ago
GregYaitanes we should do one of these again. but you can always tweet allen for that info. right allen? http://twitter.com/enbeecee/status/13143883859
about 42 minutes ago
GregYaitanes taking a 5D roll call. gale and philip and allen still here?
Galetat Thats right... we used mono pods for our longer lenses... brilliant
about 38 minutes ago
Galetat we used a lot less light... partly because we had the ultra fast lenses
about 38 minutes ago
PhilipBloom am back! i froze!
GregYaitanes philip is back! allen?
PhilipBloom i love the Z-Finder for handheld, essential for me. Any good stabilisation like monopod, tripod, handheld rig...
GregYaitanes i have to think because we did that it makes it ok for anyone to do it. you can't look at the ep on may 17th and say it doesn't look good or emotionally didn't allow you to connect to the material. http://twitter.com/VisualEdgeChris/status/13144396163
about 36 minutes ago
GregYaitanes trying to get allen back. standby.
PhilipBloom If there was one thing I would want from the camera without a doubt it would be uncompressed full HD out of HDMI
about 35 minutes ago
GregYaitanes cine style lenses would help in a big way. http://twitter.com/KevinOtterness/status/13144383806

GregYaitanes allen is back!
PhilipBloom I tend to find overhearing only occurs with continuous shooting with no breaks between clips. As soon as one is finished you start another That is when over heating "may" occurr

GregYaitanes thank you! http://twitter.com/innezzie/status/13144751102
about 28 minutes ago
GregYaitanes no but that was a concern for us. happens on film as well. because we were hyper aware it all went pretty good. http://twitter.com/SuBmieretty/status/13144713906
about 28 minutes ago
GregYaitanes good question. i'd like to do a private HD screen to see. http://twitter.com/JeffyMe/status/13144568723
about 27 minutes ago
GregYaitanes we did not want to do that with this. gale can explain but we've lost a few people in the chat. tweet him directly. http://twitter.com/mopho_barry/status/13144568207

allenpalmer Keith Shaw that is.
PhilipBloom i have seen 5dmkii on massive screen. Holds up SO well. I would LOVE to see finale on big screen!
